Lembit Saarts (1924 -2016) was a renowned artist known for his distinctive, abstract, bright and airy style of painting. Born in Tartumaa in 1924, Saarts studied at the Tartu Higher Courses of Visual Arts from 1942-44 and at the Tartu State Art Institute from 1944-48. He has been exhibiting his work since 1958 and held personal exhibitions at the Tallinn Art Salon in 1971 and the Tartu Art Museum in 1974. A member of the KL since 1959, Saarts has painted portraits, landscapes, and compositions, including non-figurative ones. His work “Kuused liival” (Pines on Sand) from the 1950s is a typical example of his style. The painting is oil on paper, measuring 13.8 x 20 cm, and comes from the artist’s family collection.
